We all experience anxiety. It's how you choose to live with it that counts.
Does your mind race with worries or fears? Are you constantly canceling plans with your family and friends? Would you just like to sleep at night?
Anxiety is that uneasy feeling that creeps in and tells us to worry, while crippling us in our everyday living. It is one of the top reasons the practice phone rings.
Whether it is an adult whose anxiety is causing a disruption in their workplace or relationships, or a parent who doesn’t know how else to manage their child’s social or academic anxiety. Anxiety disorders plague 40 million adults a year in the US. Anxiety happens. Everyone feels anxious from time to time - it’s human nature, but it doesn’t have to be your constant reality.
At Craig Counseling, I facilitate anxiety counseling in a goal-oriented, action-based way. Many people have the impression that counseling is coming into an office, unloading how you feel to your therapist, and feeling better at the end.
I don’t believe that.
Don’t get me wrong... there is listening. However, we believe that the only way to truly overcome the anxiety you’re feeling on a day to day basis is to have goals.
To really work on those goals means to have homework assignments and to be cognizant of how you are handling anxiety outside of the office. This is what turns my approach into action-based.
How do I know if I have anxiety?
Here are some symptoms of anxiety that have been reported:
- Panic, fear, and uneasiness
- Sleep problems
- Not being able to stay calm and still
- Cold, sweaty, numb or tingling hands or feet
- Shortness of breath
- Difficulty concentrating
- Heart palpitations
- Dry mouth
- Nausea or digestion problems
- Tense muscles
Most people don’t experience all of these symptoms, but let’s face it…
Do you want to live with any of these at all? If the answer is no, schedule an appointment and let’s see how I can help.
My approach to anxiety treatment
Anxiety counseling consists of learning the origin of the emotional response and how to resolve it.
I utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to tackle anxiety. CBT is the top evidence-based treatment for anxiety. It is considered a short-term approach, which means if you’re utilizing the tools, you shouldn’t be in therapy very long.
The process begins with exploring your irrational thoughts and beliefs. By challenging and debunking these irrational thoughts you become less anxious.
But to be perfectly honest...
Our mind can and will still try to play tricks on us, even after debunking these thoughts. This is where the developing of effective coping skills comes in.
During this crucial step, I guide you through identifying replacement behaviors that you can use when feeling anxious. These will help you calm down so you don’t reinforce, or build on the anxiety you are feeling.
"Jessica is such an amazing therapist and really helped me learn ways to deal with my past trauma/letting go issues. I have been to therapists before and because of my profession they think well “you already know this”. Jessica however actively listened, encouraged, and met me where I was without throwing my profession in the mix. I am forever grateful to have had Jessica as my therapist."
"Jessica was able to create a comfortable environment where our girls can have honest conversations around Mental Health. Our girls were able to gain important knowledge about themselves, and gather resources that would further support a healthy lifestyle. In addition to that, Jessica created a space where concerns and real life scenarios were discussed and shared in a judgement free group. Jessica has a great ability to connect with our youth, which makes her an amazing and dynamic facilitator to have."
"Jessica is very knowledgeable and professional. She has helped me work through difficult times and pushed me to think about life's obstacles in a new way. If you are looking for a therapist who is passionate, friendly and will take you to a new level I'd recommend Jessica."
"Jessica has been essential in starting my own private practice. She helped guide and inform every step of creating my own practice and has been THE reason I decided to make this career choice. Knowledgeable, experiences, and well-versed in all things private practice!"
"In our middle school parent lunch and learn 'Tackling Anxiety and Making it Tangible for Our T(w)eens,' Jessica did a wonderful job of explaining about anxiety and how it manifests in our students. In addition to being knowledgable, Jessica was very organized, well spoken, and personable. Our parents left with a great level of understanding while feeling heard."
